New Zealand’s Forest and Wood sector is a major player in terms of its contribution to New Zealand’s economic performance. The findings are contained in a report by NZIER that was commissioned by NZ Wood for the Wood Council of New Zealand (Woodco).

Ngai Tahu forest sale to Swiss approved by OIO

The Overseas Investment Office approved the sale of 22,000 hectares of land to foreigners in August, most of it for forest development. In the biggest deal, a Swiss family-owned company, Corisol New Zealand, was cleared to buy more than 18,000 hectares of forestry land in Canterbury from Ngai Tahu Forest Estates for $22.9 million.

Greenpeace honoured where it was once a pariah

In the spring of 1997 Glen Clark, the then-premier of British Columbia, called Greenpeace the enemy of the province for its high-profile antilogging campaigns targeting the forest industry. In 2011, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson honoured the organisation by declaring 15 September Greenpeace Day to mark the founding of the ecogroup there 40 years ago.

The top guns from New Zealand's forest and wood industry were announced on Wednesday evening at the National Training Awards run by FITEC (the forestry and wood industry trainng organisation). Out of 7000 trainees, 11 outstanding candidates and companies were recognised at the highest level and awarded at a ceremony held at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre.
