Committee Info

The Association adds value to its members' businesses by undertaking activities that are better handled collectively than by individual growers working alone. To deal effectively with the complex range of issues involved, FOA has specialist committees. They are:

Health, Safety and Training

Chairman: Sheldon Drummond (JNL East Coast)

Develops policy and programmes to improve the skills of those involved in the industry. The Association contributes financially to Forest Industries Training and also promotes recruitment and training. Joint Committee with NZ Forest Industries Council

Issues: Better training techniques and standards, development of industry-specific courses, health and safety, recruitment and retention of skilled labour for the industry.

Fire

Chairman:

Administers the Forest Fire Prevention Programme, identifies forest fire training needs, initiates fire prevention and control research, and manages related expenditure.

Issues: Forest fire prevention, rural fire services, training,improved emergency communications, and fire prevention and control research.

Forest Biosecuirty

Chairman: David Balfour (Timberlands)

Responsible for the Forest Health Surveillence Programme, promotes policies to improve biosecurity, and identifies and provides funding for forest health issues. Liaises with the Dothistroma Control Committee.

Issues: Forest health surveillence, forest health/biosecurity, border control procedures, and overseas import requirements.

Forest Resources & Environment

 Chairman: Peter Weir (Ernslaw One)

Develops policies on a wide range of issues relating to forest growing and the environment, including forest certification, climate change, water and RMA issues.

Issues: Interpretation and implementation of the Resource Management Act, forest certification, forest sink issues, compliance costs, and power line corridor maintenance.

Promotions & Membership

Chairman: Lees Seymour - Nelson Forests

This Committee is responsible for the Association's internal and external communications, including the NZ Forestry Bulletin, members' Update and other Association publications.

Issues: Public opinion of forestry, foreign investor perceptions, influence of local and central government on forest owners' business.

Research

Chairman: Peter Clark (PF Olsen Ltd)

Identifies research programmes and projects of importance to the forest growing and harvesting sector, works with other groups to arrange research funding and dissemination of information, and provides forest growers' views on pan industry research.

Issues: Significance of newly released research, harvesting and tree breeding research and research into alternative species.

 


Transportation

Chairman: Brian Pritchard (Pan Pac)

Responsible for all issues relating to the safe and efficient transportation of forest products from the forests to the market, including policies for the funding of roads and safety of logging trucks.

Issues: Logging truck rollovers, driver recruitment and retention, training, funding for roads, forestry transport operations, and transport policy issues. Dates of meetings for 2011 are:
